BML 1: Home Gala Adwick 21st June 2025
88 points. Just one point short of our target, but packed with positives! In 2024, we said, “if you want to be the best, you need to swim with the best”. That’s exactly why we’re in this league, to learn, all of us.
The racing on Saturday was superb. While we only had one win (brilliant swim from Miranda!), we saw a huge number of podium finishes, lots of improved scores from our last gala, 27 pbs, and not a single DQ. That’s great progress.
The determination to improve, the way swimmers fired each other up for relays, the eagerness to seek feedback and learn, these are all signs of a squad that’s growing together. I’m sure Derek would be proud.
A huge thank you to Seth for coming out of retirement and supporting the team. Some inspiring swimming!
The atmosphere was fantastic, fuelled by our brilliant supporters. Just one point short of our goal shouldn’t overshadow the quality of performance and attitude displayed. We’re proud of everyone and ready to take this energy into Rotherham on 5th July! Details to follow soon.

BML 1: Ponds Forge International Pool, Sheffield: Sunday 1st June 2025
This was quite an adventure - especially coming hot on the heels of our Bridon Shield victory at The Mets the previous day!
For many of our younger swimmers, this was their first experience of an actual competitive Meet… and what an introduction! To swim in a first Gala at Ponds Forge International Pool really was a baptism of fire!
This was our first outing in the dizzying heights of BML League 1, and, faced with competition from Rotherham Metro, Stocksbridge and City of Sheffield (HUGE clubs) - it was never going to be an easy ride. However, the spirit, endeavour, commitment and team ethos demonstrated by our swimmers was thoroughly outstanding… from the “only just eight” year old to the eighteen year old, with every age in between, our swimmers did not let us down.
We learned a lot simply by competing against clubs with strength in numbers and in depth, and will be much more aware of what we are up against in the next three Galas.
There were some memorable team and individual performances, and, despite PBs galore at the Mets, there were even more PBs - which illustrates the enormous efforts made by our swimmers.
Particular congratulations must be extended to the following swimmers:
Miranda Burkill Winner 13/14years Girls 50m Butterfly
Jack Jones Winner 13/14 years Boys 50m Butterfly
Stephen Tuffrey Winner 11/12 years Boys 50m Freestyle
Noah Burkill, Jakub Garbacik, Alexander Drury and Stephen Tuffrey - Winners 12/13 Boys Freestyle Relay.
We go again on Saturday 21st June at Adwick for our Home BML Gala. It is a later start, with the warm up at 5.15pm, but we hope that you will be able to join us to give our swimmers your best support.
Tough day at the office today, but that’s absolutely no reflection on the kids – they were fantastic! We always knew this would be a challenge, and they rose to it with great determination. Five wins, plenty of podium finishes, even more PBs after yesterday’s efforts, and incredible team spirit throughout. There are some very good positives. Future BMLs will be a measure of how our team improves over the coming weeks. 89 points today, so we aim to improve on that score at our Home BML on 21st June.
Some valuable lessons learned, and we’ll work on the DQs – but when every swimmer gives their best and fully supports their teammates, it’s a win in every sense. Proud of them all!

John Harrimans Championships Meet 23rd March
This is a very special Gala. It is usually a swimmer’s first Gala involving competitors from all the Doncaster Clubs - therefore, offering the opportunity to swim against swimmers outside the Kingfishers. It invariably involves a lot of younger swimmers, especially “first timers”, but also more experienced swimmers who are looking to improve their times. There is no Individual Medley - just the four strokes, swum over 50m. The cut off entry times are relatively tight, so experienced swimmers, often with Yorkshire rankings, are not able to compete. This, of course, gives other swimmers the chance of medals and / or higher placings.
There were 36 swimmers competing across two sessions - with 24 swimmers in Session One and 12 in Session Two - with 13 girls and 23 boys ranging from age 8 years to 17 years. Medals were awarded to the first 6 places.
The atmosphere was one of great enthusiasm, with lots of cheering and applause from fellow swimmers, but especially from families and friends watching their children starting out on their swimming journey. Competition was quite strong in some events, whereas in others, there were very clear winners coming in several metres in front of others. Inevitably, with a less experienced field, there were several infractions which led to disqualifications (including a couple amongst our Kingfishers), but this, although heartbreaking at the time, is one of the quickest ways to learn, improve and progress.
Our Kingfishers, as always, gave a very, very good account of themselves. Stand out performances were achieved by:
9 Years: Arthur Fillingham: 1 Silver 2 Bronze
Evie Gilson: 1 Gold 1 Bronze
11 Years: Ray Chapman: 2 Gold 1 Silver
12 Years: Sophie Barley: 2 Gold 1 Silver 1 Bronze
Stephen Tuffrey: 1 Gold 1 Silver
13 Years: Alfie Green: 2 Silver 2 Bronze
Mia Grant: 1 Silver 1 Bronze
Emily Kirk: 1 Gold 2 Bronze
14 Years: Maisy Ebbage: 4 Gold
15 Years: Lucas Stallard: 3 Gold
Corey Edwards: 2 Silver
Harris Chapman: 3 Bronze
16 Years: Jack Collins: 1 Silver 2 Bronze
Lucas Johnson: 3 Gold 1 Silver
In total, there were 64 medals achieved by our swimmers, earning us the Top Club out of six which entered:
Armthorpe 357
Adwick 312
Dearne Valley 296
Dartes 245
Edlington 100
Askern 26
This is clearly a fantastic result! There were countless PBs, despite two other outings this month, and our swimmers should be rightfully proud of their achievements. This was a wonderful individual and team effort!
A huge thank you to all our travelling supporters, Team Managers, coaches, officials and all poolside staff. We are also grateful to Adwick for organising and hosting this annual event: well done and thank you, Carol and team!
Our next outing will be to Ponds Forge, Sheffield for the Rotherham Long Course Meet on 17th and 18th May. We’d love to see you there!
Beverley Barracudas Spring Equinox Meet 16th March
Another fantastic weekend of racing—just two weeks after Worksop Dolphins—and we still had plenty of PBs! The team spirit was strong, and swimmers embraced new challenges.
This meet was a great opportunity to get familiar with the venue before returning in September for our final chance at Winter Yorkshire qualifying times. Our swimmers mingled with other clubs, made new friends, and gained valuable race experience. Many tackled events they’d never raced before, stepping outside their comfort zones. Whether it was their first time racing 100s, taking on the 200 IM, or braving the 100 fly - Well done to all who gave it a go!
Some fun stats from the weekend:
155 races in total!
87 PBs—more than half of our races!
Every single 200 IM race was a PB!
Special mentions to Alex B, Annabelle B, Ben G, Alfie G, and Henry J, who achieved PBs in every race—an amazing achievement! Corey gave us a masterclass in backstroke, and Sam’s time improvements were impressive, showing fantastic progress. Well done to Arthur, Emily, Miranda, and Lucas J for finishing in the top three overall for their age groups!
Key takeaways:
more diving practice,
stronger underwaters,
and better streamlining through turns…
oh and hit the board at the end!
Well done to everyone who raced! And a big Happy Birthday to Laura!
Next up is the Harrimans Gala this weekend—another great chance to improve race skills!

Worksop Dolphins Open Meet 1st March
Another fantastic weekend of racing at the Worksop Dolphins Open Meet!
This meet was a brilliant opportunity for our swimmers to experience a top-class venue, with its impressive and challenging atmosphere it will prepare them well for future competitions. For some, it was their first taste of long course racing, and they handled it brilliantly. For our more seasoned swimmers, it was also a great chance to try different strokes over different distances, and they pushed themselves outside their comfort zones.
With none of the usual Yorkshire based teams competing, our swimmers could fully focus on their own performances without distractions. Medals were tough to win, making each one even more rewarding, but we always intend to focus on the time, rather than the reward. Beyond the results, the team spirit was fantastic. There was plenty of space for them to spend time together to build friendships, team spirit and they supported and motivated each other throughout the meet.
It was great to see them all embracing the challenge, learning from the experience, and most importantly, enjoying themselves. Whether smashing PBs or gaining valuable race experience, every swimmer should be proud.
Well done to everyone who raced! This was a valuable stepping stone in their swimming journeys, and we can’t wait to see the progress continue in the next competitions. Beverley next!
Keep training hard, and let’s build on this momentum!

Yesterday was another brilliant day of championship swimming with our amazing swimmers!
There was great team spirit. They were all really well behaved, were great company and looked after each other.
They all deserve to be very proud of themselves for their swimming. Some of them not quite getting what they wanted and learned from their experience, and others who smashed huge chunks off their pbs. Whatever they did, this will be a huge boost in their swimming journeys.
I do have to mention Vlad, who managed to get to his first Yorkshire final in the 16 year old 50m free. A very powerful performance and one I’m sure he can repeat in future championships. As long as he keeps eating 8 eggs for breakfast though!
Well done Vlad! And well done to all who raced. Next Yorkshire Championships are later this year at the start of winter, an event I would like all our swimmers to target.
But first we go to Ponds Forge again next weekend for the Worksop Dolphins gala and another chance to improve race times.
