Equality Diversity and Inclusion
What We Stand For
“At Armthorpe Kingfishers, we commit to creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment for everyone, no matter their age, race, gender identity, disability, background or ability.” This aligns with Swim England’s equality and diversity commitments.
Why Inclusion Matters in Aquatics
Swimming should be accessible to all — diversity strengthens our club community and helps everyone enjoy the sport safely and fully. Swim England’s action plan highlights tackling barriers preventing full participation.
Our Club Expectations
We expect swimmers, coaches, volunteers and parents to show respect and dignity in all interactions. Discrimination, harassment, bullying or insensitive language has no place at our club.
Inclusivity in Practice
We will actively work to remove barriers to participation — offering opportunities, support and adjustments where needed so people of all backgrounds and abilities can take part.
Accessibility for All Abilities
We commit to making sessions accessible to people with disabilities and learning differences, and will consider adjustments to coaching, timing or resources when necessary.
Supporting Under-Represented Groups
Statistics show that people from ethnically diverse communities, lower socio-economic groups and LGBTQ+ swimmers are often under-represented. We will actively welcome and support participation from these groups.
Club Culture and Wellbeing
A positive club culture means prioritising welfare and wellbeing, not just performance. We encourage open communication and safe spaces for members to share concerns.
Training and Awareness
Coaches and volunteers will undergo inclusion training (e.g., Swim England’s Foundations of Inclusivity CPD) to build understanding and confidence in leading a diverse club environment.
Clear Reporting and Support
If anyone experiences or witnesses discriminatory behaviour, there will be a clear way to report it. We will act promptly, fairly and respectfully.
Continuous Improvement and Accountability
We will develop and review our own Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan regularly, with measurable goals and feedback from members, mirroring the approach encouraged by Swim England.
“Inclusion isn’t a buzzword — it’s a commitment to every person who wants to be part of our club. By embedding these values into everything we do, we make Armthorpe Kingfishers a stronger, fairer and happier place for all.”
We chatted to Mike Hawkes from Swim England, where we uncovered how they're engaging and empowering ethnically diverse communities in their Sport
Disability Provision at Armthorpe Leisure Centre.
Accessible Facilities
The swimming pool area is equipped with several accessibility features to ensure that all individuals, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy the aquatic facilities:
• Level Access: There is seamless, level access from the changing areas to the swimming pool, eliminating potential barriers for those with mobility challenges.
• Hoist for Wheelchair Users: A hydraulic hoist is available to assist wheelchair users in entering and exiting the pool safely and comfortably.
• Wet Side Chair: For individuals who require assistance but do not use a wheelchair, a wet side chair is provided to facilitate pool entry.
• Handrails and Steps: The pool features six steps equipped with handrails on both sides, offering additional support for those who prefer or require it.
• Ladder Access: A ladder with handrails on both sides is also available, providing multiple options for pool entry and exit.
These features collectively ensure that the swimming facilities are accessible to a broad spectrum of users, promoting an inclusive environment
Inclusive Changing Facilities
The centre’s commitment to inclusivity extends to its changing facilities:
• Accessible Changing Rooms: Located within the changing village, these rooms are designed with ample space (dimensions of 240cm x 248cm) to accommodate users with mobility aids. Features include:
• Lateral Transfer Space: A 140cm space on the left side of the toilet allows for easy lateral transfers.
• Support Rails: Dropdown and wall-mounted rails provide additional support for users.
• Accessible Sink: The sink is positioned at a height of 69cm and is reachable from the toilet, ensuring convenience.
• Emergency Alarm: A fully functional emergency alarm system is in place to ensure user safety.
• Changing Bench: An adjustable, wall-mounted changing bench measuring 148cm in length caters to users who may need assistance while changing.
• Wheel-In Shower: Equipped with an adjustable shower head, handrails, and a flip-down seat (44cm in height), the shower facilities are designed for ease of use by all individuals.
These thoughtfully designed facilities ensure that all patrons can change and shower with dignity and comfort
Armthorpe Leisure Centre actively engages with the community by offering programs that promote inclusivity:
• Swim England Learn to Swim Programme: The centre offers swimming lessons following the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme, a world-leading syllabus designed to help children and adults learn how to swim
