Leo Beatty Trophy

The 'Leo Beatty Trophy' is awarded each year by the Yorkshire Swimming Association to the masters swimmer with the highest points total from all their swims in the past season.
This year's winner is your head coach, Dave Holmes! This is down to his swims at the North East Region Championships, where he won all 15 gold medals on offer (in a one day gala) as well as his recent performance at the National Masters Championships where he brought home 2 golds, a sliver and a bronze. To cap off a successful year, Dave has been selected to swim for Yorkshire in the Inter County Championships for the 3rd successive season (Tina Wilson has been selected for this team too).
There is also a National Masters Decathlon competition, in which swimmers score points based on their times for swims in 6 different categories - butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, medley and distance freestyle. Each swimmers times are adjusted for their age using a long, complicated formula. This allows a good comparison between the older and younger swimmers. Currently Dave is ranked 8th in the country - yet another great achievement, especially considering he's done just 2 masters galas this year!
Dave's times from the National's last month should see him back on the official World Top 10 rankings for 2011 in the 25-29 years age group for up-to 3 events - the 100 free, 100 fly and the 200 free. The last time Dave made the 'top ten' list was back in 2009, after he brought home several gold medals from that years British Masters Championships.
Looking forwards to 2012, there are several galas already being planned by the Armthorpe Masters squad. Dave and Tina are planning a trip to the Long Course Nationals in March, about half a dozen Kingfishers are heading to Scarborough for the Yorkshire Championships in May and no doubt Dave and Tina will be trying to claim a few more golds at the Short Course Nationals next October - interestingly both these swimmers will be moving up an age group, which should mean they are now racing against people older than them (kids, this is a good thing when you're a Masters swimmer!!)
So huge congratulations to Dave on winning the Leo Beatty Trophy, keep up the good work.
