BML Round 1 Gala at Armthorpe

Post date: 17-Feb-2020 12:24:36

Our 1st gala of the year took place yesterday, Sunday 16 February at packed out Armthorpe Leisure Centre. To say that there was plenty of atmosphere would be a big understatement. This was a high level and very competitive gala with many great swims and close finishes. Scunthorpe were the superior team having just come down from Division 1 but the other 3 teams competing well with Wakefield and Armthorpe extremely close all afternoon and finishing with the same number of points. As this was our first gala of the season we had several people doing jobs that were new to them but you would have never have known it and I got several comments about how well run the gala went. Our swimmers performed very well and we didn't have a dq all afternoon which certainly helped our scoreline with all the other clubs getting some disqualifications. Our swimming discipline earned us extra points so a big well done to all our swimmers. For our 10 year old teams which included two swimmers from our Pre speed section (James Ellis and Eleanor Idle-Crane) it was their first taste of a league gala with crowds of noisy supporters and I was very pleased with how they all handled the situation. Brooke Dickinson became the first 10 year old to win a Individual race whilst the 10 year old boys team won both their relay races. We won 11 races out of 49 and there will certainly be many pbs. My swimmer of the afternoon was Ashton Stones. Ashton in his first major gala swam 3 individual races coming 2nd each time and helped the 10 year old boys to two first places in the relays. Very well done Ashton. Incidently, I got a comment from one of the other clubs complimenting us on our young swimmers. As far as I am concerned this was an excellent disciplined team performance which I was very pleased with. The next BML is at Scunthorpe on Saturday 29 February so lets be ready for another close encounter.

Final Scores were: Adwick 96 Scunthorpe 140 Wakefield 124 Armthorpe 124
